Protecting Your Rights after Your Adoption Is Finalized
Experienced Counsel from Cofsky & Zeidman, LLC
The adoption process can often seem endless. When the adoption is complete and you take your child home, there can be a tremendous sense of relief. But there will still be issues to address… nothing that will put the adoption in jeopardy, but things you need to do for your benefit and the benefit of your child. Cofsky & Zeidman, LLC, can help.
At Cofsky & Zeidman, LLC, we have worked with more than 1,500 families during the adoption process. Attorney Donald C. Cofsky, Fellow and Past President of the Academy of Adoption and Assisted Reproduction Attorneys, has been recognized as an Angel in Adoption by the Congressional Coalition for Adoption in Washington, D.C. He is AV-rated by his colleagues in the legal profession under Martindale-Hubbell’s Peer Review Rating System and has been named as a New Jersey Super Lawyer, as well as an Awesome Attorney by South Jersey Magazine and a Top Attorney by SJ Magazine.

After Your Adoption Is Complete
Whether you use an agency or bring a new child into your family through a private adoption, you will receive a signed judgment of adoption within a couple of weeks of the final hearing. You will also be entitled to a new birth certificate, naming you and your spouse or partner as parents of the child. The birth certificate process may take up to four months.
Once you have received the new birth certificate, you can file for a Social Security number for your child. You will be required to include this number on your tax return in order to claim your child as a dependent. You can also obtain a temporary Tax ID (identification) number for your child until the actual social security card is issued. For tax purposes, you may also be eligible for an adoption tax credit. We will advise you how this credit works and what you must do to obtain it.
